There are a gazillion really awesome self-defense/martial arts schools out there, so what makes GB different? Great question... here are the top 10...
1) We profess the mindset of "provoked attack" vs the mindset of "self-defense", as we believe the best defense is a good, quick, effective offense... (i.e. "Sorry sir, you 'provoked' me to hurt you when you put your hands on me.")
2) We don't use knuckles to strike, as they tend to break pretty easily without a LOT of training... that, plus amped up attackers simply don't feel much pain and typically have unusually hard heads.
3) We don't kick above the knee. We don't knee above the groin. Too much effort.
4) Our ONLY goal is to decisively immobilize your attacker, whether he's impaired or is an Olympian, so he can't continue his attack.
5) We don't believe in 'pain compliance' (pressure points, joint locks etc) because amped up guys simply don't feel pain. Likewise, we don't believe in "controlling" an attacker as a strategy because we don't want to stay there all day for the police to show. We want to end it and go home.
6) We train ONLY in close up, sudden, violent attacks that are usually reserved for women. No poseur or ego motivated attacks... nothing for much more than 'bad breath' distances.
7) We only use moves and techniques that almost anyone can both perform and easily recall, with most GB responses being considered illegal in competition. (There likely won't be any judges around to evaluate your technique anyway.)
8) We aren't a "school"... we train with 'one and done' short seminars that can last a lifetime, where you actually get to hit, poke, knee and kick things (other than your esteemed instructor). You got issues?? Come on down!
9) GB ONLY specializes in the first few seconds of an attack to give you the opportunity to either escape or access a lethal or non-lethal weapon. (Weapons are really great, but ONLY if you can actually employ them...) Sucks when they're back home on your dresser. We even do pepper spraying practice.
10) We ALWAYS have fun. In fact it's been suggested that our tagline should be "We make violence fun!" (T-shirts are on the way...)
SO! If you want to compete, develop self-discipline, learn a traditional style, increase your fitness level and flexibility or earn that coveted black belt, that's awesome! We did ALL those things for the same reasons, but that's not GB. We don't do any of that. You'll just be the same old person but a little more dangerous.
